Is Dance convention season your favorite time of year?
Although conventions are a lot of fun they can also be quite stressful. One of the biggest things that stress dancers out is getting noticed. Everyone wants to be pulled out to perform the combination in a select group or wants to receive a scholarship. Well here are a few tips to help you out.
1. Look the Part:
When going to a convention it is important that you look your best. Make sure your hair is slicked back and neat. You want to wear bright colors and clothes that the choreographers can identify you by.
Be sure to improv before and after the combinations. The choreographers aren’t only watching you do their combinations they want to see your individual style as well.
3. Pay attention and don’t be afraid to ask questions:
Asking questions in a ballroom full of people is pretty intimidating but don’t let that get in the way of your learning. Chances are other people in the room have the same question. Just make sure you are always paying attention and be sure not to ask a question that has already been asked.
4. Try every move:
Convention choreographers come from all over the world, so their styles or the tricks they are teaching may be very different than what you are used to. Don’t be afraid to try new things!! You may find a new move that you are really good at or a new style that you enjoy.
5. Dance full out:
Some convention rooms can get pretty packed and when everyone is learning the dance it can be hard to dance full out. Try to dance as big as possible even from the beginning. If you don’t dance full out until you learn the whole dance and break out in groups you will be more likely to make a mistake. Your body won’t be used to doing the moves and when you combine that with the pressure of people watching you dance, it could lead to mistakes.
Even though dance conventions can be stressful they are also a lot of fun. It gives you a chance to meet new people and learn from amazing choreographers. It’s not all about getting a scholarship its about taking away the most you can about dance and yourself.
