DIY Dance Costumes

Competition and recital costumes can be very expensive, especially when you are in a bunch of dances. Here are some ways you can make your own costume, using basics from DanceWear Corner and adding fabric and embellishments. To start off you want to choose what type of costume you want to use… two piece, one piece, skirt, shorts… Below are some of our favorite basics.

Now that you have picked out what costume you want it’s time to decorate. You can add rhinestones, fabric, trimmings, appliques or a combination of all of them. Here are some of our favorite techniques.

You can pick up rhinestones from your local craft or sewing store or you can order them online. You can cover the top completely in rhinestones or scatter them. You can create a sunbeam or ombre pattern as well. Also don’t be afraid to mix colors and sizes, it gives the costume demienson.

Picking out the right fabric to add to a costume is very important. If you can’t sew you don’t want to get a fabric that needs the edges to be hemmed. We suggest you use a mesh lycra, or stretch lace fabric. Once you get the right fabric there is so much you can do. You can make a sash, or drape it in the back. You could attach it to the sides of the top and criss cross it in the front. One of our favorite techniques is to take a lace fabric and covering a nude bra with it.

Another one of our favorite techniques is using appliques. Appliques come in all shapes and sizes. You can place them anywhere on the costume. They can be glued or sewed and you can add rhinestones to give the costume some shine.
